Dear mom, hello mother, Hey mom, no fuck why is this so hard Dear mom,

Happy birthday! You know, if you'd be here, you'd be 26 again? We're on a 24 month cycle out here.
Dad is doing well. His work with the provisional government has netted us a nice place closer to where he works. It's still 3 hours from here to there though. At least it's not 4 anymore, right? Bright side of things like you always said.
I'm doing fine. I'm about to start my Transitory semester. Wait. Right, that's something we only have up here. So yeah, because of the 24 month cycle, the campus has this extra semester in summer to prep us for the change in setting and difficulty between Entrance year and Freshman year. I dunno what change is setting means, it's still the same campus, but that's what it says in the handbook. I'll write again when I have time, but things are gonna get busy.
I miss you mom. Happy birthday again.

"Aright. Now where the fuck did I leave my regulator?"

Oh. This is new. Is this the thing where I uh...I name myself? Okay. I'm Drake. I'm 10. On Earth, I'd be 19 and something. And something interesting about me is that I've never seen Earth. I mean, I probably did? But I was so young when I moved here I just, don't remember. Don't remember nothing but the Martian sky.

Do I...do I do something else?

I found the arms. These things NEVER fit right. But I have to wear them when it's too hot for the sweater. God damn dress codes. Why do they gotta have such huge hands on Mars?

Also my regulator isn't in here.

Of course you've seen Earth. It's that tiny blue dot in the sky, duh!

Also, try checking under things, there's some suspicious lumps in the bed and pillows that could cover things and also it looks like one of the drawers in the bedframe is open.

Okay, who are your alien overlords and are they plotting their own deaths?
That's more important than you think, because suicidal overlords will take their holdings with them. That's you.

What does your regulator look like?

Also, how are you communicating with us? It sounds like you're surprised to notice us, so we're not an abstract part of your mind and you don't normally hear voices. So what are we to you?

Okay yeah TECHNICALLY I've seen it, but not knowingly. I mean if you told me to point to which dot that looks sorta blue in the sky and figure out which one was Earth, I couldn't tell ya.
I checked the drawers. That's where the arms were. And the chest part they attach to. I swear the school did like the bare minimum to adapt the uniform to a human body.

>>1122570
>>1122598
I hate the arms. They got these zippers I have to connect to the chest piece first, then patches I need to adhere together, it feels so weird! If their goal was to make the school uniform uncomfortable for everyone, good effing job.

What I did though, was I went outside, made sure the trash cans were back in, took a walk down to Space Supply to get groceries for the next month, took a break cause I was getting all light headed, then came home. I hadn't been out for the past 2 days so...I know the regulator is in the house. Either here or downstairs.

Classes start again tomorrow, so my plan is to get some food for me, and dad if he decides to come home tonight, and get my shit together for tomorrow morning. That includes the regulator. I'm not taking one of the public ones, their airflow sucks.

>>1122568
Uh it's about this big? Gray with some red squares on it besides a small button to turn it on and off. Should be a hole on top where I attach the breathing tube.

I'm guessing you're either the voice of reason everyone says you get when you become an adult. I mean, I been waiting a while to hear these voices of reason or whatever, so I guess that's you. Or I am going crazy from spending too much time outside without the regulator.
Or you might be that chat I left open like a month ago and never shut it down, but that'd be weird cause I should see the interface if you guys are chat. But if this is supposed to be the new update, then hi guys, welcome to my 'cast. I got one of the new augs, straight from Earth I think, the kind they slip behind the eyes so there's no scarring? How did I afford it? I didn't, I think it was just one of my dad's perks. They been real nice to us for the past couple of years. I think it's to make up for the thousands of hours of overtime he's been putting in.

So yeah, you're me going mental or total strangers invading my headspace. I'm not sure which I prefer less.

>>1122566
Okay, what's your definition of overlord? Cause there's the provisional government, but they're not real suicidal. Just dumb. It's why dad has to stay so late over at Caldera-North, cause they're always in the middle of some emergency and need dad's help to control things. Only other overlord would be the Dean of Olympus-Downslope, and I don't think he's suicidal either. Stressed out, cause I see more gray on him every year, but I don't think he wants to off himself.

We're not actually sure what we are to you, only that we can communicate. This is the first we've heard about you having... brain implants? Is that what your "augs" are?

If your uniform isn't made for humans, who is it made for?

Okay, back to the task at hand. Did you check in and around all the furniture in this room? You mentioned that you sometimes leave the house without the regulator, so are you sure you had it when you came back? Where do you normally put it when you come home? Do you use it inside the house? Does it need maintenance?

>>1122683
My augs? That's a Marnari thing. Well, adapted from Marnari tech. It's this thing that builds itself once you stick it up your nose and-actually you know what, since the augs and uniforms are both Marnari, lemme epxlain that. I did this for a project last year so I did a whole lot of research. I even remember a lot of it too!

1122815

Okay, so Marnari. So that's a shortened term they use to call themselves. It's actually Mar'nar'ni, an alliance of three avian species from the same world- the Marnyarni, the Narchani, and the Niyanchi. The Marnyarni are really tall, like 7 feet to 9 feet, some of them can go 10 even. The Narchani are shorter than us, but they seem to be the guys in charge. And the Niyanchi, they're fluffy. Very fluffy. Don't think they're fat, they hate that.

Anyway, these guys are refugees. According to them, they had been traveling for generations trying to find a new home cause their home system was destroyed by a GRB, and they were flying through the galaxy in this big fleet. And like, they'd go into stasis when their ships were going between systems, but everytime they woke up a few more ships were missing and more Marnari just wouldn't wake up. They were constantly losing experts that knew how to fix the broken stuff and material to fix it with. On top of that, generations had passed so newer generations forgot what half their stuff did or how it worked, and just had to rely on second hand knowledge that wasn't always correct. So by the time they reached us, they were barely holding together. There was some tension, cause we saw a huge ass fleet pop inside the Kuiper belt. But, eventually we deciphered each others' languages, and made a trade: they could settle on Mars in exchange for whatever advanced tech they still had working, and the Marnari just agreed. It started Human-Marnari relations that are pretty good but still kinda rocky today.

The Terraforming project on Mars gets a huge leap forward that lets us walk outside the green hab zones for a limited time, we got augments that can grow and replace themselves in your body, and the regulators. And some other stuff but that's not my field.

Anyway, my dad is a liaison for the Marnari provisional government, and it's why I live on the side of Mars that is like 99% Marnari, and why I'm attending a school that is mostly Marnari. So I have to wear a uniform meant for Marnari.

Okay, so the house is a mess, but this IS an improvement, I am working on cleaning it up. Still working on it.

>>1122696
What? Oh, um enriched air. Yeah, Mars is still terraforming. Marnari tech helped speed up the process like crazy, but it's still gonna be centuries long to get all the conditions right. So air's breathable, but outside of green zones that are pumping air out like constantly, oxygen levels are too low for humans or Marnari. So when not in a green zone or indoors, you take a puff of the regulator anytime you feel light headed. Or if you're in a red zone, you just have it on all the time. It gives you an extra boost of O2 and scrubs your lungs of anything that shouldn't be there, cause Mars still has stuff neither of us process.

Yeah I'm sure. I-oh snap that's right! The breathing tube and mask is in the sink! I remember, I took that off and left it in the sink the soak overnight cause it was starting to smell skunky. You know, I use that word 'skunky' a lot but I have no idea what a skunky is.

Okay, so the tube came off here, which means I set it down somewhere while I let the other parts soak. So...I'm guessing it's somewhere downstairs.

That reminds me, the whole reason I went out was because dad might be coming home tonight. I left cause I was thinking of making something for him cause I know he's real tired when he gets back so I figured making a home cooked meal would be nice before he sits in the living room and passes out.

So Martians are interstellar aliens that are native to Earth-like planets, and we agreed to share technology and terraform Mars so we could inhabit it together? Convenient!

Did you mean a "gamma ray burst" destroyed their homeworld?

>>1122817
Skunky? Oh, you mean like a skunk! That's a small, black and white mammal from Earth that evolved to generate noxious chemicals as a defense mechanism. They're infamous for the foul smell of their spray, but they're also really cute. Some people keep them as pets.

What's to the left of the sink? I see something that looks vaguely regulator-like, but it's obscured by the pile of stuff in the foreground.

So why are they terraforming the planet while people are LIVING ON IT? You don't move into a skyscraper while it's still being built!! That's a horrible idea, all the best and fast terraforming involves WMD-levels of energies, it would've been better to evacuate any early bases on Mars, before dropping several million 'bigger than the one that killed the dinosaurs' ice comets onto the planet to get it enough water for some proper oceans (or fewer than that, if you want just a green planet with a bunch of shallow lakes), giving it non-stop torrential rain even if you are fancy about it. And then there's shipping massive amounts of Nitrogen from Venus or Titan (and presumably the tanks of Nitrogen would just be SHOT at the planet to impact and explode, due to cost...), so mostly normal plants will grow outside. Oh, did your people place electromagnets and mirrors between Mars and the Sun, at the Lagrange point for a technological magnetosphere and a way to heat the planet enough? And those mirrors melted the poles first? What about all the soil generation that requires every INCH of soil on the planet be made and isolated from the native toxic regolith? The machines to do that should be hideously disruptive! Whether they're big crawlers, or if space based superlasers are used in part of the process!

Like NONE OF THIS should happen while there are people living on the surface, you know?!

Oh yeah, gamma ray burst. That's what the history text said. That's gotta suck. The chances of something like that happening in your home system must be crazy stupid small, but it happens anyway. Just win the bad luck lottery or something with numbers like that.

Anyway, most of this is just from my room or takeout, or. Actually I dunno what most of this stuff was. But the thingy down here is just the trash bin for the bathroom when I gotta clean up-uh never mind. It's not in here that's all you need to know.

That's right, I took off the panel downstairs where dad keeps all the tools for stuff! I was attaching an old picture to my regulator. It's my friends, see?

This was something that was drawn by Pai during the summer camp we last had together. Shit I was like, what was I? I think like 6 or 7 when we did this. It's been so long since I seen them. You wanna see? Hang on lemme just fiddle with the aug. Now how do I set auto-focus-there we go!

Okay there. Yeah so, the one on the bottom? That's Doto'o. He's my bird-bro. My brod, my broder of a different feather. I see him all the time, but the others?

Those are the Daksa sisters. Twins believe it or not. Left one's Pai'sa, she's the one who saw the pic we took and drew one of her own. I kept that one and she took the photo. She was kinda shy, but liked the games I had on my aug-stack. We had shit for connection out there, but the co-op stuff was great.

Her sister on the right's Pikke'si. When Pai was busy with something, Pikke was taking a break from climbing or doing practice salvage work. She'd show up and play MercWars with me and Doto'o.

Olympia Downslope takes students from every district this side of the mountain. Which means I'm finally gonna see them again! I figured I'd have the pic attached to my regulator so they'd see me. I know they sometimes got trouble telling humans apart, even if there's gonna be like-only 2 or 3 of us on campus- and if I'm being honest I have no idea how the Daksa sisters look now. All three of them still had their youth down on, made them look all pudgy and fluffy. By now, they got their adult plumes in and I got no idea what it'll be. I figure either they notice me, or I'll find Pai when she puts her photo on something.

Man, I just went off on a tangent again. What were we talking about?
