You’re not embarrassed at all. You’re afraid.

Put simply, you’re actually a warlock, not a mage. You’re pact-bound to an unseen force rich with secret knowledge and power. The product: perfect knowledge of literally everything in absolute detail. The price: well, that's a tricky thing to explain.

{The terms of the pact dictate (in summary) that Charlotte can only recall the infinite knowledge while reading the book, and that it leaves her head as soon as she stops. There is a version of Charlotte, a memory of her soul imprinted in the tone that is drained when using the book, measured by how wide the eye in the cover is open. This allows her to cast spells from the book without harming herself, but she needs to be careful, lest she extinguish that memory and lose her soul entirely.

But when Aloe Vera read merely a couple passages of, what to her looked like scripture, the book latched onto her for just a moment and took something. A memory in her soul, a fundamental fact, maybe something small, unnoticeable in the moment, in exchange for a mere scrap of knowledge. Just enough to make her a little bit hungry for more.

If her or anyone else ever kept reading, they would lose more and more and more and more until the book made a final offer: Accept infinite power for whatever remains of your soul.

Reading the book makes you forget important things about yourself until you’re offered this pact. Pact bound readers cannot keep knowledge outside of the book. Charlotte doesn’t know what happens to people who don’t accept the terms, because she has already accepted them. She hopes she doesn't find out what happens.

As for the mechanics of reading the book, she can spend time searching for a specific thing and depending on the complexity of understanding required, she will either find it quickly, or it will take some searching to surface it. Outside of combat she has a lot of time to find what she's looking for, but in a fight it’s a lot harder to rip through the pages looking for the right spell. Not impossible, just difficult.
She could look up literally anything else, but the knowledge leaves her as soon as she closes the book, so she really only uses it for spells because those remain after being cast, and the knowledge of them isn’t required outside of the casting.

OH. Use bookmarks! Bookmark a few general purpose offensive and defensive spells with red for offense and blue for defense. Other colors for specific spells. I bet the book will only allow bookmarking a certain number of spells before it does something to disable the bookmarks, but it should work for basic stuff. Obviously it won't let us do something like label the bookmarks to say exactly what they are and start making a quick lookup system to turn it into a kind of wizard tome. Though, I guess at some point there would be too many bookmarks to physically use them properly.

While it's upside down and possibly stuck in the floor, grab its wings to immobilize it. Then have Aloe bash it with any nearby pantry utensil (tenderizer maybe?).

Magic exploits wise - what if we, outside of combat, memorize a special word/gesture, which, when performed, will activate a spell we 'buffed' ourself with?

For example, we make a written note that explains: Current stored spell - Saying 'sharkpants' will cause a magic flying sword to be summoned and fight enemies for us.

Then, we peer into the book and cast a spell that does said effect as a delayed spell, triggered when you say the codeword sharkpants. You close the book. You forget about the spells details, but you can read your note and have a delayed spell ready to use in combat!

What can we offer the book? Hmmm. How about obscure trivia from a dimension foreign to it? (I.e. if we can state a fact the quest writer doesn't already know about or finds amusing, we get a favor).

A screaming van passed by. He hated them. They would steal people away from their homes and take them to the white rooms. He pulled out the last bucket of frozen noodles from the dumpster and carried on his way. The showoffs lived in a big museum where they put everything up on shelves and then threw them away a week later. He hated those showoffs. The sidewalk broke up into tiny islands and then into a field of long grass. Finally, the grass turned into the wooden porch of an old house. He made sure to side step the broken boards and the holes that rotted through the floor. The screaming van had took him, once. The men in the white room tapped his lumber and scolded him when the sap was dirty. What did it matter if it was dirty? The sap isn't for eating. He dropped the frozen noodles on the table and took the lead needles into the living room. They went in the steel bowl, and were crushed by the back end of a screwdriver. The man smiled as he followed the curled wires from bowl to plug. As the plug and outlet met, the microwaves lit up and began to buzz. The powder inside the bowl leaped and sparked, eventually settling down into a floating image. As the man looked into the image, a set of sparks lit the inside of his head, and he knew what it wanted: computer hearts. Then, as the image began shaking, he frowned. Unplugging the machine, he looked towards the shelf of glass jars and identified the third one as fried. He scowled. The traps outside were empty.

Aloe panics and swings her staff in a wide overhead arc, whacking you right on the head. Your slime ancestry makes you weak to bludgeoning attacks, and you take double damage!! The devil skull is still stuck on you, suckling your mana reserves right out of you.

Let's get an easily-memorized low-level spell that typically requires ages of spell research in tangentially-related fields to discover.
Like the common Shockwave spell, capable of causing the user to jiggle profusely, but all kinetic motion is force-multiplied when the user's atoms interact with not-their-atoms.
Like this skull.

SCAN the devil skull.

Remember the spell of Maximise Slime, a spell that empowers slimes! It'll help Aloe! And seeing you're part slime. that'd turn you INTO a slime temporarily too.

Smash your chest against the wall to get the devil skull's horns stuck, pull yourself free and Aloe clubs it with her stick while it's stuck.

You take a moment to scan the creature. Time seems to stand still for a moment as the information races over your brain:

DEVIL SKULL

A weird bug crawled inside this skull seeking shelter, and instead what it got was a pact with a devil whose bones refused to die.
Its ultimate goal is to remove a victims head and replace it with their own so they can better enact their evil deeds (like poking people with pointy sticks and arguing about rules)
It has a habit of sneaking around the ceiling and dropping on unsuspecting prey, impaling it with its horns.
Not uncommon to find them in groups, but you’ll only find one or two on the upper levels of the ruins.

Common tactics tend to involve breaking the skull, since that unseals the pact and leaves the creature harmless.

MOVES
Mana leech: clamps onto a host and slurps the ahrcane juice right outta them
Impale: its teeth and horns are hella sharp, and can pierce most materials with ease
Tackle: ol’reliable. Headbutts, leg swipes, scratches, bites, etc etc. the broadest category of raw, basic, offensive physical attacks

CHEF GUIDE
the bug can be eaten once removed and cooked. Recommend steamed to purify. The meat then pops out of the shell and can be chopped and seasoned to taste or added to other meals as a protein. Make sure to remove the mana glands and prepare those separately so the juice isn’t wasted.
The skull can be boiled into DEVIL STOCK, which is a great base for soups. A lil spicy, but it’ll for sure keep you warm even in the coldest biomes of the ruins.
Alternatively you can crush and grind the skull into a DEVIL COMPONENT for alchemy use. Mainly used as a core ingredient to make rune chalk for drawing spell circles, but there are a small handful of other uses for it.

and then the sensation of something like a heavy padlock clicking open resonates within your cavernous mind. You KNOW how to cast that spell. You've always already known it.

Runes and incantations fill your mind, rituals and rules you know better than you know your own name because they're etched on your soul. You know a spell that can enhance your latent slime powers. Warmth fills you, a soft wind rustling your hair.

A focused calm envelops you, mana channeling through your cap and into your body, and you begin to draw circles in the air.



You feel it ripple and bubble through you, your fur congealing and melting into your flesh, your bones turning into rubber and disappearing as you grow and grow and grow, becoming larger and heavier and slimier than you thought was even possible. You nearly bump your head against the ceiling as you tower over Aloe, her eyes wide in a mix of fear and fascination as you hang over top of her.

The devil skull peers up at you, frozen in terror. It's stopped drinking mana, and seems to be hoping you've somehow forgotten it exists.

Your mana well is overflowing in this strange state, empowering you magnificently. How do you want to end this miserable thing's existence?

As fun as it would be to have a personal suck toy, you can do better. Peel this thing off and spike it into the ground. If it survives that, then just stab it with something.

Create a vacuum pocket in your chest to suck the bug right out of the skull. They're harmless when they're not in the skull anymore, right? After that you can use the kitchen you're in to make some skull soup base.

embrace your slime heritage and absorb the bug inside yourself for the sake of irony... you can make yourself acidic right?
