"Fifteen minutes. Possibly Twenty."

A deep, resonant voice is talking.

"Behind the door. Maybe in the closet if they were a little guy."

Your face is resting against a vividly patterned but stale and stained old carpet. It's been cleaned but whatever is in there is here to stay.

A half smoked cigarette is next to you.

"I suppose they could have been in the dinette or the washroom if they were slick enough."

There is a spot of blood nearby.

A streetcar bell sounds. The room is dim. The sun is going down.

"Could be thirty minute or more if we're being honest"

>Fuck it, let's go I. Through the front door.

You strut towards the front door with a wide, confident walk, when a hand almost as wide as your chest is held out Infront of you. A large human in a jerkin leans in you way.

"Whoa there, cocktail pickle. Show me some colours, yeah. This is not the place or night for time wasters."

>submit to a credit check

You hold out your two 10 gold notes like your flicking out laundry.

You smile broadly
"Gold's your color, yeah? You've got twenty of it and at least another thirty in your winning smile."

The man steps forward and taps a finger in the center of your chest.
He manages to dredge up some extra impassive meanness to add to his stare.

"Booger, if you ever try to flirt with me again I will flick you into the garbage."

He takes a few steps back and folds his arms.

"Go home to your mommy and bring back some real money. Twenty gold doesn't get someone like you a seat here. It's a flashy joint, see? For flash people."

Right, instead of gut-shooting this wanker, how about we use our signal and call our rich and much more persuasive friend to help us out.

Wow that came out wrong. Go home and call for backup, like actually call someone. Enough with the emergency flare already, you pyromaniacs.
If you need cash in a flash, turn in the job early. It gives us a chance to question the client, too. Otherwise let’s plan on using the vip entrance with a friend.
>>

Oh, yeah, if you turn in the original job you'll be able to flash the cash to get in the front door.

HOWEVER, we could just go through the window. Can't talk to the guy in public that way but he's probably got some incriminating files in his office we could snoop on.

>Sleep on it

The nature of this case means that time is an issue but only so much. Nothing is urgent at this point. You need to step back, step into bed and get a chance at a fresh start with real breakfast and maybe even some help. You don't NEED it, but you may as well percolate on your options.

You drag yourself up the stairs bidding a pleasant good night to Balter and get yourself back to your apartment. You keep all your inventory in your coat before hanging it up. That keeps it simple. You change into your pajamas, drink a little green tea and flop into your oversized bed.

Your mind weighs up your options.

Well we got a lot of information today, so definitely don't feel like we're in a bad spot.

I think the play tomorrow should be on the level as possible, getting into a fight we could have easily avoided will just slow us down. So I think we should hit up our well-to-do friend to help us get in the door, and if things go sideways, having a friend to watch our back will come in handy.

Dwight Chemisil
An absolute mountain of an elf and one of the closer things Atonak has to an honest cop. Has the intimidating presence of a small building and has a punch like a beer truck. A little too inclined to thinking that any pinch is a good pinch and not inclined enough to do too much paperwork. But when it comes to the crunch he still believes in doing the right thing. Strong and carries some sway on account of his badge and years of service (which he is feeling) but isn't gonna get in Dutch with other cops or local business as a favour to you. Has access to info on anyone with a criminal record. If not at his home, he'll be at the Rockslide East precinct.

Shiokara Halligan
No one goes back further than you guys. He stuck with the goblin life of hustle, crime and influence but he carries a torch for you that could be seen from space. He once betrayed his den to keep you safe and you once saw him leap across a table and beat someone half to death with cocktail muddler for threatening you. That's kind of the flip side of it. He may be your friend but he's still a liaison, a spy and an enforcer for a large criminal organization. He's currently working undercover at a local LOOTERS restaurant and renting a room above it.

Sala Goodlady
As a blooch (blue-child, born with troll blood) Sala is actually immensely strong and durable but generally seems completely unaware of this. She regards herself as a delicate, inner city office worker and while not above a little sneaking around and even theft she has a tendency towards hiding behind you or trying to jump into your arms when things get scary. She is, however, an EXCELLENT and connected jurisprudent. She would probably be a highly in-demand lawyer if she was legally allowed to be. She has a decent record of winning cases and would be in the black more if she focused more on law and less on get-rich-quick schemes or gambling. As is, there is a non zero chance she will ask to borrow some money when she sees you. You and her may or may not be a little sweet on each other and she is the only person to date you've given an uppies pass to.

Ro Dollarhyde
A lower mid tier goblin also from your old den. Entrusted with overseeing small construction jobs and collecting envelopes but not exactly a mover and shaker. He knows you, likes you well enough and knows to be nice to you but isn't about to ride or die just because you and his boss are old friends. Physically, his virtues are that he is a formidable and versatile unarmed opponent and a career hoodlum with the skills and knowledge that come with that. Mentally, one of the best things about him is his realism. You and him have occasionally sympathized with each other when you feel like the only sane people in a room. He is cynical, practical and the easiest to pull around to your way of thinking and simple solutions. Not an emotional guy. Bit of a wiseass. Bit of a punkass.
>>
No. 1108203 ID: 6b8094

Get rich quick schemes, hm. So, Sala probably wouldn't be opposed to giving you uppies into the kitchen window to sneak into the Chop. I think she may be more the bouncer's type anyhow!

I think the disadvantage of going with Shio is that once we get him up to speed, he's likely to stay with us until this is over. And may arrange unfortunate incidents for everyone else involved in Karl's head getting bashed even if we don't let him kill them while we're together.
Not that I'm against it, mind you, just weighing our options.

>Shower and coffee
You set the drip going and step into a nice hot shower. You wish the pressure was higher but it feels as though it's washing away some of the confusion and shortcomings of the previous day. You get a lot of time to think. You get yourself squeaky clean with some coal tar soap. You smell good and hard boiled.

The coffee hits the spot. No milk or sugar. You find another 10 gold bill in the coffee tin. Probably not enough to qualify you as a high roller. But it's good to have.

You give some thought to going to Shiokara for help. He's probably cashed up and connected but once he knows you need help it'll be hard convincing him you no longer need it. He'll be with you. Still, there's not much you can't do when you work together.

>>1108213
>Morning prep and check the mail.

You flick through the mail that came through your slot. Bill. Bill. Advertisement for the local soapland. Junk mail for a correspondence course in becoming a private investigator..."Become a sleuth in 14 easy courses only 50 gold each". Banana oil.

You give some thought to asking Sala for help. It'll cost a bit, but she will probably have some decent info. And if you can convince her there's money to be made she is good to go with a heist mission. She can be relatively sneaky for a 6'3" troll woman.

QM: Tracking IDs I feel like there's a motion (and a half?) for Shio and a motion for Sala. I will see what others think. It's the start of the day so you definitely have time to think.

I'd support Sala over Shio. Shio' a loyal friend, but if he got recognized, that could complicate things. Too big a player to keep this case small. and a gambling hall for 'high rollers' is the kind of place that would recognize him. Then everybody thinks "what's he want from those files?" Too much mess. Sala's got what we need, brains and muscle

It's worth noting that Shiokara is currently working undercover and spends a lot of his time as a spy. So despite his high ranking position in the den, I don't think he throws his weight around in person. His appearance and position might not be common knowledge.

That said, I will have a blast no matter who you work with, and I think your choice of Sala has real merit and potential. Just wanted to make sure you knew what's what.

We need a tie breaker. I'll just roll a D3 if we can't get to one.

>Go see Sala

You suit up and re-equip everything you were carrying with you yesterday. You finish your coffee and step into the brisk morning air of mid autumn Atonak. The cold air up your nose wakes you up more than the coffee, honestly.

Credibility Street is one of the nicer arcade style streets off the main road. Good restaurants and good restaurant supplies and a few nice little bars. And one pretty exceptional lawyer. You walk up the outside steps of the Hot Iron Okonomiyaki parlor and rap on Sala's door. You need to try a few times.

"I'm coming...I'm coming...give me a sec..."

She opens the door. Barely awake and you think very slightly hungover. Even still, she's something worth looking at. One hundred and ninety one centimeters of country raised, well fed, college educated trouble. She yawns sadly and rubs her eyes.

"Ka-a-a-a-arl..! It's the first thing in the morning..."

You glance at your watch.
7:48am.

"Okay, this is going to be a lot to take in..."

Sala approximates the noise of full time at an ice hockey game.
"Karl. I am on 5 hours. I need coffee and a hot breakfast before you hit me with this."

You sigh and trudge to her kitchen. She has half a carton of milk. A large jar of kimchi. 2 lines and a box of assorted high quality vegetable juices you suspect she took in lieu of an actual payment cause she felt bad for a client. You rest your head on the bench. Her soft spots are bigger than yours sometimes.

You inform her of the uninspiring situation in the kitchen and she calls back, awake enough to be playful.

"Then I guess you're taking me somewhere,Mr Nagakura. How should I dress for her date?"

The dress shirt she was nebulously wearing earlier sails past your view as you stand between the kitchen and the main room and you make a note not to enter yet.

You pass your stealth roll and lean around the corner casually. Whatever remained of your concussion is blasted away by something else. Sometimes, you're as red blooded as the next guy. You feel better, but watch out, detective! You've unlocked a dangerous new meter!!

You clear your throat and recommend something professional and all-purpose. A nice neat casual outfit.

You ask Sala what she knows about "The Chop"

"I know I'm never going there on except to serve them my angriest papers. I don't care HOW good the shawarma is. I heard they make dogs and chickens fight each other for money! I haven't been able to prove it yet!"

Sala continues to dress
"All the public stuff is roulette and black jack and guinea pig racing. But that's all a front! The real high stakes stuff - I guess for people who got bored with good old honest games of chance - happens in a back room! I keep leaning on my pet cop to rumble them but "The Chop" is protected by the Blue Toes. They're a tough gang and they can buy more cops. The hot rumor is that they even have a chunk of a few chiefs."

Sala balls her fists as she grabs a turtleneck sweater from a laundry hamper
"OOohhh it makes me so MAD! I wanna see them shut down but for a little place they have so many angles covered!!"

You roll back around the corner so as not to fill your meter.

"Do you have any idea how to get into 'The Chop'?"

Sala does a playful chuckle as she zips her skirt and fastens it.
"Well, I mean it doesn't even open until 5pm. It's that sort of joint. The only folks that will be there at the moment are janitors, preppers or maybe some light security."

She pulls on a set of tights.
"So if you want to go there now, we either need to act like we're meant to be there...or your thinking of a knockover job. That can be fun too."

Sala pats you on the shoulder to get your attention as she leaves. She shoots you a smile that would melt the ice cap.
"Now come on. You can explain to me what this is all about over a zabaglione! There's a petit fours place I've been meaning to try."

You hurry to catch up as she leaves

>Give her the basics.

You explain that some documents were stolen from your office by force. That you tracked the thief to a club then back to his place where he had been killed.

Sala gestures to the menu several times when the waiter comes up. She can't decide between eggs bendict with smoked salmon or eggs benedict with jamon. So she simply gets both.

You go on to explain that some cops and thanomagus came to the scene and you found out that the guy who robbed you was hired by Corley Baily and has given the documents to him.

Sala is thirsty and orders zabaglione, an apricot nectar delight and an iced tea.

You heard from the corpse that Corley is often at the gambling Den called "The Chop" but that you were unable to get in last night because you weren't carrying enough money and the bouncer didn't like you.

Sala requests the petite fours. She has trouble deciding on which ones.

You ask her if she is alright and if there was any reason she was drinking last night?

Sala shrugs
"I ain't really been in the chips for a bit. But no, I just discovered a cream liquor that tastes like butter pecan ice cream and I kinda drank too much of it."

>>1108361

You explain that you want to get into the chop to get your documents from Corley.

Sala stacks up a plate and swallows the tiny cake she was chewing. She thinks.

"Sorry, I might have missed something. You think Corley has your documents - that's likely enough. But he's not gonna be at "The Chop" at this time of day. He doesn't work there he's just a frequent customer. If he has them, they'll be at one of his houses."

Sala dabs her mouth.

"Corley isn't that sort of criminal. He just knows a lot of them. He's a landlord."

You have a black coffee and a neglected cigarette.

Your bill comes to 18 gold.

She makes good points.
If your files still exist, like, he wanted them not just for you not to have them anymore.
thats a problem that can be solved with fire.
Then if that is so, hes got them stashed either at his office or at his home.
Now, landlords aint quite crooks by the legal definition, but they at least live in the same area code.
Even the cleanest.
So, if it is the kinda stuff thatd be too hot to be caught holdin, then the perfect stash would be one of his properties.
If anything ever caused it to be found, well shucks officer, musta been left by my last tenant.
If he was gonna make a stash house outta one, itd be;
One not currently in use.
A nicer one in a safer spot cause he dont want some local entrepreneurs strapped for cash popping the locks and helping themselves.
Rent would be kept higher than youd expect so no happy homemaker decides to try and move in.

Course, this is if hes dirty enough to need a personal off the books stash house and occasional non registered domecile for his own purposes.
Entertaining folks you cant be seen taking home.
Doxies to crooks.
The company upstandin folk frown at.

If not, well, he coulda just shoved it under the floorboards of any place owned nearby the chop.

Check his listings for both.
A place thatd make a good den and a place that would be close.

The two of you put your heads together while you walk (not literally, she'd have to pick you up) and you reason some core points.

1. Corley didn't destroy the documents. If he'd wanted them destroyed he could have got Hisk to do that. Instead he got a handover.

2.If the docs are hot and valuable he'd either keeping them on his person or in one of his empty properties. Under the floorboard.

3.Last possibility is the documents are in a safe in one of his offices. But you reason he'd want more deniability than that.

Sala is delighted.

"Karl this is perfect! I don't have an attorney pin, but as a registered jurisprudent I can still make a claim to the hall of records that a list of all Corley Bailey's properties - occupied or otherwise should be made available to me."

You almost smile yourself.

"What if they try and stonewall you?"

Sala does mischievous smile and squeezes her own thigh.
"It's a Saturday. So either Elaria or Clifton are working the desk today. They BOTH have a weakness for this skirt."

You avert your gaze.
"Some people are such saps."

It's an amazing thing to watch her work. You try not to do it too closely, lest you get caught up in it.

The impressive thing is the stuff she doesn't do. No offer of favors, no batting of eyelashes, not so much as a double-entendre.She doesn't even use a particularly honey voice.

She simply leans in, professional and courteous. States her needs and the facts, but politely. She leans into the desk a little, lets it shift under the enormity of her.

When Clifton begins to fumble a protestation about policy she arches her back and lets her leather skirt audibly fight a losing battle with her curves. What is left of Clifton's protests die away as her skirt climbs steadily up her thighs and along her hindquarters.

He can see nothing from where he is but his mind races at the mere concept. He has lost. Those records are yours.

Sala adjust her skirt back down and turns back to face you.

You're playing it cool. Eyes down. Hands in pockets. Switching an unlit smoke from one side of your mouth to another. Good and hard boiled. No time for dames. Hard to distract. That's you. Yep.

Sala flicks open her notepad

"Jackpot, Karl! Corley has 3 unoccupied properties all within Kronjaeger! He's got a warehouse, a two story suburban place near an orchid and a 10th floor apartment!"

You nod happily as the pair of you step back onto the street. You light a smoke.
"Good work Sala. I dunno how you do it sometimes."

Sala stamps her foot a little.
"You weren't watching me work?"

"Sorry, I must have missed it. I have a lot to think about."

You can see in your peripheral vision that Sala folds her arms and pouts a little. It's cute.

The house or apartment might be our best bet. We dont know this guy but if hes gone through the trouble to steal our stuff, hed probably want someplace private to read them. Warehouse might work if he frequents its the most and has a proper office.

>an orchid
Flowers don't make for great landmarks, necessarily. But it's easier to get into a house than a penthouse and a warehouse is just a big place to search. Let's try there first.

Cute as can be.

Hmn.
So, all good candidates.
Rating them by proximity to the club would help pick the first joint to check out if what he was carryin was too hot to be caught holdin and he needed it stashed pronto.
If we rate by security...
The tenth story.
Perfect spot for a hide away.
Less chance of snoopers at the window.
Better security, at least youd think an appartment would be...
Suburban home is a good second.
Warehouse less safe from pryin eyes an private ones too, but could be a great spot if he takes to stashin dodgy gear in stacks... less of primo pad to knock boots with some doxie on the sly.

Sala makes a cute ahem-hem sort of laugh and proudly displays carbon copies of all 3 locations.

>>1109969
You decide to check out the apartment first. It's the closest one to the hall of records, after all. You take the elevator up to the 10th floor and find the apartment Corley owns. You are both confronted by a locked sturdy oak door.

You absolutely have a bobby pin. There is also a vent, slightly out of your reach, that just has a latch to open it.

>>1111130
The only window to this place is a glass sliding door that leads to the balcony. It's inaccessible from here.

The door is locked and there doesn't seem to be a key under the mat. Or there wouldn't be if there was a mat. Which there isn't.

You decide that the best approach to asking for a boost from Sala is to make it sound as casusl as possible.

"Sala, could you lift me up to that vent a moment?"

Sala lets out a gasp and folds her arms indignantly. Hah boy.

"Wh- Just because I'm a blooch and was raised in the country doesn't mean I'm sort of brawny stevedore! I-I'm an office worker and a lady, Karl. I couldn't possibly..."

Sala, possibly due to her upbringing, seems either wholly unaware of or is in fervent denial of the fact that she could bench press an ork, never mind easily lift you. You'll need a nuanced approach to this.

Miss Sala, while you are as dignified as you are humble, you are also as tall as I am short. I do not presume to call you rustic by pointing out the relative gap in our strengths.
Or you could just demonstrate your reasoning by trying to lift her first.
