"Fifteen minutes. Possibly Twenty."

A deep, resonant voice is talking.

"Behind the door. Maybe in the closet if they were a little guy."

Your face is resting against a vividly patterned but stale and stained old carpet. It's been cleaned but whatever is in there is here to stay.

A half smoked cigarette is next to you.

"I suppose they could have been in the dinette or the washroom if they were slick enough."

There is a spot of blood nearby.

A streetcar bell sounds. The room is dim. The sun is going down.

"Could be thirty minute or more if we're being honest"

You put some money down on the table and stand up. Sala stands with you and does a small bow in thanks.

"You're the best Karl. I need a certain quality of grub to do my best thinking."

The two of you put your heads together while you walk (not literally, she'd have to pick you up) and you reason some core points.

1. Corley didn't destroy the documents. If he'd wanted them destroyed he could have got Hisk to do that. Instead he got a handover.

2.If the docs are hot and valuable he'd either keeping them on his person or in one of his empty properties. Under the floorboard.

3.Last possibility is the documents are in a safe in one of his offices. But you reason he'd want more deniability than that.

Sala is delighted.

"Karl this is perfect! I don't have an attorney pin, but as a registered jurisprudent I can still make a claim to the hall of records that a list of all Corley Bailey's properties - occupied or otherwise should be made available to me."

You almost smile yourself.

"What if they try and stonewall you?"

Sala does mischievous smile and squeezes her own thigh.
"It's a Saturday. So either Elaria or Clifton are working the desk today. They BOTH have a weakness for this skirt."

You avert your gaze.
"Some people are such saps."

It's an amazing thing to watch her work. You try not to do it too closely, lest you get caught up in it.

The impressive thing is the stuff she doesn't do. No offer of favors, no batting of eyelashes, not so much as a double-entendre.She doesn't even use a particularly honey voice.

She simply leans in, professional and courteous. States her needs and the facts, but politely. She leans into the desk a little, lets it shift under the enormity of her.

When Clifton begins to fumble a protestation about policy she arches her back and lets her leather skirt audibly fight a losing battle with her curves. What is left of Clifton's protests die away as her skirt climbs steadily up her thighs and along her hindquarters.

He can see nothing from where he is but his mind races at the mere concept. He has lost. Those records are yours.

You turn your head away but let your eyes drift back to where Sala is bending. Uh oh.

Your whole head turns that way. You are officially staring. The subtle skindentation. The way the stripes emphasize her curves. You can't seem to stop. You begin to hear your heartbeat in your ears.

Sala adjust her skirt back down and turns back to face you.

You're playing it cool. Eyes down. Hands in pockets. Switching an unlit smoke from one side of your mouth to another. Good and hard boiled. No time for dames. Hard to distract. That's you. Yep.

Sala flicks open her notepad

"Jackpot, Karl! Corley has 3 unoccupied properties all within Kronjaeger! He's got a warehouse, a two story suburban place near an orchid and a 10th floor apartment!"

You nod happily as the pair of you step back onto the street. You light a smoke.
"Good work Sala. I dunno how you do it sometimes."

Sala stamps her foot a little.
"You weren't watching me work?"

"Sorry, I must have missed it. I have a lot to think about."

You can see in your peripheral vision that Sala folds her arms and pouts a little. It's cute.

The house or apartment might be our best bet. We dont know this guy but if hes gone through the trouble to steal our stuff, hed probably want someplace private to read them. Warehouse might work if he frequents its the most and has a proper office.
>>

>an orchid
Flowers don't make for great landmarks, necessarily. But it's easier to get into a house than a penthouse and a warehouse is just a big place to search. Let's try there first.

Cute as can be.

Hmn.
So, all good candidates.
Rating them by proximity to the club would help pick the first joint to check out if what he was carryin was too hot to be caught holdin and he needed it stashed pronto.
If we rate by security...
The tenth story.
Perfect spot for a hide away.
Less chance of snoopers at the window.
Better security, at least youd think an appartment would be...
Suburban home is a good second.
Warehouse less safe from pryin eyes an private ones too, but could be a great spot if he takes to stashin dodgy gear in stacks... less of primo pad to knock boots with some doxie on the sly.

Sala makes a cute ahem-hem sort of laugh and proudly displays carbon copies of all 3 locations.

>>1109969
You decide to check out the apartment first. It's the closest one to the hall of records, after all. You take the elevator up to the 10th floor and find the apartment Corley owns. You are both confronted by a locked sturdy oak door.

You absolutely have a bobby pin. There is also a vent, slightly out of your reach, that just has a latch to open it.

>>1111130
The only window to this place is a glass sliding door that leads to the balcony. It's inaccessible from here.

The door is locked and there doesn't seem to be a key under the mat. Or there wouldn't be if there was a mat. Which there isn't.

You decide that the best approach to asking for a boost from Sala is to make it sound as casusl as possible.

"Sala, could you lift me up to that vent a moment?"

Sala lets out a gasp and folds her arms indignantly. Hah boy.

"Wh- Just because I'm a blooch and was raised in the country doesn't mean I'm sort of brawny stevedore! I-I'm an office worker and a lady, Karl. I couldn't possibly..."

Sala, possibly due to her upbringing, seems either wholly unaware of or is in fervent denial of the fact that she could bench press an ork, never mind easily lift you. You'll need a nuanced approach to this.

>>

Miss Sala, while you are as dignified as you are humble, you are also as tall as I am short. I do not presume to call you rustic by pointing out the relative gap in our strengths.
Or you could just demonstrate your reasoning by trying to lift her first.

If the politeness doesnt help try:
"Okay sweetheart, I'll be the stepladder, but i cant promise that short skirt of yours is gonna cooperate in keeping you lookin more ladylike. Thats an eyeful for anyone just waiting to happen. If your all good with yer kaboose out and loose, climb on sister."

You demonstrate as clearly as you think you can to Sala that you fundamentally weaker than her.

You crouch down and wrap your arms around her knees.

"See? Watch this."

You strain with all your might to budge the troll blooded woman but to no avail. Which would be perfect.

Unfortunately, her stockings prove slicker than you expected and as you straighten your legs and push, instead of remaining immobile, your hands glide up her legs and you end up gripping her backside like someone was going to steal it from you.

Sala is staring straight forwards for what feels like 30 seconds but is probably less than 3. Her head stays forward, but her widened eyes shift down to you.

"See? Itd only get more embarrassing from here. Youre a lady. Aint dignified bein lifted in a shortskirt with gams like that."

Gotta make her feel like shes the dame she is pal.
She is, but i guess shes a bit self conscious about being strong. Thinkin its all unfeminine like.
Shes wrong and all, but that aint the kind of baggage you can smoothe talk her into puttin down no matter how gifted your gab.
